Is L-Theanine Used to Lower Blood Pressure?

One of the greates protective factors in the Japanese diet is green tea. According to numerious studies, drinking several cups of tea on a daily basis can reduce the risk of heart attack in twice. It is a common knowledge that grean tea (especially Camellia sinensis known as Thea sinensis) contains much higher concentrations of L-theanine than other teas.

Theanine has been proven to lower blood pressure and bring high blood pressure back to normal, although it has no effect on normal blood pressure.

In a 1995 a study by several Japanese researches demonstrated that rats with naturally occurring high blood pressure consuming theanine powder, showed a significant blood pressure reduction, which was a great news. The same experiment was held on rats with normal blood pressure. This demonstrated no changes in blood pressure even when the rats received extremely high doses of bulk theanine powder (as high as 2,000 milligrams per kilogram).

L-theanine has proved to work through its GABA-enhancing effects. GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) lowers blood pressure as well.

Green tea extract contains a phytochemical known as gamma-glutamylmethylamide (GMA), which also lowers blood pressure. The combination of both L-theanine and green tea extract may have significant positive effects.
